Quitting a bad job on the spot might be something you fantasize about, but have you ever actually done it?

Quitting can be dramatic, and who doesn't love a little bit of drama? But too much drama can make you feel bad. And it's tough to be the cause of that drama, even when you know you're in the right. But the worker in this story put himself in that position because he felt like he had no other choice. When you're being disrespected in the workplace, you need to be able to stand up for yourself, or else you'll never get ahead. People will continue to take advantage of you until you start to speak up for yourself. It's rare that others will advocate on your behalf. You have to do it for yourself. 

One thing that most people value in their workplaces is a sense of security. You hope that you can reliably show up and get paid for your work. It's not a huge ask. You show up reliably, so they should too. But sometimes in the service industry, your schedule can change at the drop of a hat, and there's not much you can do about it. Good managers, though, can communicate through this. They know how much work you're putting in, and they find a way of keeping you in the loop about scheduling decisions. It's the least they can do.
